July 17, Public talk 7-9pm
Placemaking & the Remaking of a Modern City

Cracks in the Pavement - an evening engagement with Mark Lakeman

Portland Placemaking pioneers Mark Lakeman and Mighk Simpson are coming to Calgary for four days of interactive workshops and talks, July 17-20, 2014.

Hear firsthand about community bookshelves, impromptu street tea parties in the street, neighbourhood "water coolers", community gardens, and more and how they helped shape Portland's vibrant, village culture.

Mark Lakeman's presentation will also illustrate detailed examples of new forms of shared community amenities, including urban agriculture, community gathering places, alternative transport amenities, youth-involvement projects and more.

Mark Lakeman is an architect and urban designer who, with his neighbours, transformed their own intersection into a place for community gatherings and interaction in 1996.  This started a movement in Portland, OR that has spread throughout the city and birthed City Repair, an organization that engages citizens in transforming places.

Placemaking is one of the most effective tools available for community building that brings neighbours together as part of the project planning, consultation and construction processes. These projects have successfully made neighbourhoods safer by slowing traffic and lowering crime rates and helped to create resiliency through continued community engagement.

This inspiring talk is geared towards anyone from community builders, public service people, artists, industry professionals, municipal government employees and activists.

We invite you and your friends to join us for an inspiring look as to what is possible in Calgary and in your neighbourhood!

Doors open at 6:30, event starts at 7:00.
